Information technology also doesn't hurt that the photography Gina Homolka's blog, Skinnytaste.com, has long been my go-to resource for healthy recipes. They're succulent and have no guilt-factor! I was introduced to Gina Homolka and her Skinnytaste Weblog past a friend several years ago and I have been following the blog ever since. When The Skinnytaste Cookbook was announced, I was cautiously excited. Sadly, a lot of the food blogs I follow put out cookbooks effectually the same time and so I lost track of this ane.

http://bookslifewine.com/r-the-skinny...I was introduced to Gina Homolka and her Skinnytaste Blog by a friend several years agone and I accept been post-obit the blog ever since. When The Skinnytaste Cookbook was appear, I was charily excited. Sadly, a lot of the food blogs I follow put out cookbooks around the same time so I lost rails of this 1.
Fast forwards some fourth dimension and I'one thousand once again trying to command my nutrition. I'd started using some of the recipes on the Skinnytaste blog but rarely. Then I decided to borrow a copy from the library and I loved it. The Skinnytaste Cookbook reminds me of the old schoolhouse cookbooks I used to get years ago: stuffed to the brim with both photos and recipes. And thank goodness Gina Homolka didn't feel the need to cram pages and pages of her preaching at me - she got right to the good stuff.
From The Skinnytaste Cookbook:
Make Ahead Western Omelet "Muffins" - pg 29These are only ok. I can't rave well-nigh them simply they are easy to make, to use substitutions with and easy to pack/carry. I made my "muffins" with no meat merely I added a couple of slices of portobello mushrooms and paired the muffins with bootleg beef sausage. I did attempt freezing these "muffins" to grab and go as suggested. Either I did something wrong wrapping the omelet muffins or this is merely a bad thought. The omelet muffins were really...juicy when defrosted and full of ice crystals when frozen. I only kept them in the freezer for a calendar week.
Normally I have non-fat vanilla Greek yogurt with mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, black berries and raspberries) for breakfast(23g of protein) and so I decided to try this to run into if it was worth the work switching out to a hot breakfast. Mostly? No.
Naked Persian Turkey Burgers (served with Persian Salad) - pg 156On start bite, these Turkey Burgers were in drastic need of more: more common salt, more flavor. Information technology wasn't until the second seize with teeth that the flavors hitting me. The Naked Western farsi Turkey Burgers take a rather different flavor profile but information technology was tasty enough. I did want to add together more than salt (I didn't) but I experience a lack of common salt. In defense of The Skinnytaste Cookbook, I really similar salt. The zucchini in the burgers kept them so moist I was shocked. I tried using zucchini in a regular burger and it worked so well! And yous couldn't gustatory modality the zucchini at all.
I made the Naked Burgers and the Western farsi salad to take for lunch and it was moderately filling. No matter how I contorted, I was still very hungry by the end of the work 24-hour interval. If I brand this once again, I will have to eat it with something a little more than filling.
Buttermilk Oven "Fried" Craven - pg 151So. This tasted fine (if a little buttery) Just I will non make this again. There are but too many steps because the outcome. I institute that flipping the chicken was the worst part of the cooking process: I lost a lot of the "breading" at that time. While this is lower calorie than traditional fried craven, I'd rather only consume traditionally fried chicken as a care for/special occasion instead of making this.Mongolian Beef and Broccoli - pg 190
This is tasty! Very tasty! I put in a little too much brown carbohydrate so it's a bit sweeter than it should exist - but it'southward nonetheless amazingly delicious. This 1 is a major hit with Hubby. I served this solitary and with rice. Honey it both ways!Slow-Cooker Picadillo - pg 193
So easy simply delicious! I spent a lot of time tasting this as information technology was cooking...with a lot of called-for of the natural language, lol. I'1000 actually enjoying these footing beef recipes for tiffin. I tried information technology with rice (basmati) which was fine. BUT then I used it every bit taco meat in a very simple (and light) taco: soft beat out tortilla, .25 oz cheddar jack, some diced mini heirloom tomatoes and diced cerise onion. OMG. OMG! YUM.Irresistible Vegetable Medley - pg 274
This recipe is pretty simple and succulent! I've made something quite similar this before but in honor of my SkinnyTaste Cookbook, I decided to gussy this recipe up a little. I used purple cauliflower instead of regular cauliflower. Please note: purple cauliflower is genetically more like broccoli and has dissimilar nutritional value.
I also accept tried a decent handful of the recipes located on the Skinnytaste web log. These are delicious, likewise. I find that the Skinnytaste blog is a great place to go when I'm out shopping and didn't meal plan. I just pick something tasty correct from the weblog.
From the Skinnytaste blog:
Avocado Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette *loved*I made this for my mother-in-law the last fourth dimension she came to visit. OMG. Both of u.s.a. LOVED this. But my MIL was in heaven. Cilantro Lime Cauliflower "Rice"
This is delicious but husband isn't a fan of cauliflower rice, lol. I haven't made this often. Korean Beef Rice Bowls *loved*
Ok. This right hither? This is my jam! I loved this ane soooo much. I tried it with and without rice - it was great both ways. I as well tried it with Quinoa and I liked information technology. I also tried information technology with sriracha and *OMG* divine. Chicken Parmigiana Burgers
I made this recently but I substituted turkey for the craven. Not the all-time thought, lol. Information technology was ok. I spread garlic staff of life spread on the buns which was pretty succulent. But the turkey tasted foreign with the other flavor profiles. I do plan to make this again. I day. Shawarma-Spiced Grilled Chicken with Garlic Yogurt *loved*
OMG. This has such Large flavour. HUGE flavor. And the garlic yogurt is strong, lol. Every time I opened my lunch pocketbook the scent of garlic would smack me in the nose. Only I really enjoyed it a lot. This is staying in the rotation. Kenyan Braised Collard Greens and Ground Beef (Sukuma Wiki) *hated*
I was so surprised by how much [husband and] I disliked this. We both like spicy/hot foods but in that location was something nearly this flavor profile that just didn't work. I'one thousand not certain simply I think the cinnamon is what bothered me. One of my co-workers is Kenyan and a fabulous cook. I go along meaning to ask him for his stance on this one. Brand-Over Breakfast Sausage and Mushroom Strata
I liked this only fine. I would want more sausage for flavor, yet. I practice program to try this once again. Crock Pot Chicken A La Criolla
I quite liked this. My mother in law liked this, too. Husband was not a fan.
All in all, I dear this book (and the blogs)! I'grand so glad married man got it for me and it volition be getting a pretty practiced workout!

If you lot're ready for a more gourmet Hungry Girl, this cookbook is for you! Skinnytaste lightens up meals in innovative means similar Chocolate Cream Pie (made with Tofu), Chocolate Walnut Cookies (made with avocado instead of butter), Chili Verde (made with chicken and white beans instead of pork) and Lasagna (made with zucchini instead of pasta).I agree with the author's suggestion to make a weekly menu plan and then store for the ingredients because most people won't have these types of items in their pantry already. Most of the recipes have a lot of ingredients and will take more fourth dimension than I take after coming home from work on weekdays. However, I'm looking forrard to making several on the weekends. I particularly appreciated the notes regarding new foods like farro and her perfect pairings.

The residual of the recipes look like they won't disappoint either. Now for the basics and bolts. The book is filled with gorgeous pictures of the recipes. Recipes are laid out hands with nutritional data, which is my personal favorite.

Gina Homolka does the impossible: She takes delicious — but calorie-laden — dishes like Eggs Benedict, baked murphy soup, Panzanella Salad, Chicken Parmesan, French silk pie, and much, much more and remakes them into lite recipes. Are the recipes always equally scrumptious as the calorific originals? Not ever, but they're usually pretty good, and sometimes you lot really tin can't tell that Homolka has shaved hundreds of calories off.For those who favor the Paleo diet or any depression-carb diets, The Skinnytaste Cookbook isn't for you; however, readers who are counting calories will beloved this cookbook.

My boyfriend purchased this cookbook as a gift two Christmases ago, after I had talked near ane of the recipes in passing conversation. I love Skinnytaste and information technology's on my listing to purchase Gina Homolka'due south irksome cooker recipe volume! I highly recommend this cookbook for beginners that are looking for a lighter version of North American recipes with a dash of Colombian influence.Gina's food philosophy is all about good portion control when information technology comes to eating seasonal, make clean and whole foods that the unabridged family tin bask. What I like the most is that she puts the calories forepart and centre, and this stems from her connections with Weight Watchers. I've tried the majority of the recipes from each section (breakfast, meatless mains, sweets, salads, fish, soups and chilis) that I've wanted to attempt and can confidently say that everything has tasted amazing. A lot of the recipes are uncomplicated, as Gina promised, and a lot of them are lighter versions of dishes we are all familiar with. Then, don't expect dishes you lot haven't heard of before - they should all be fairly recognizable!
Below is a partial listing from memory of some of the recipes that me and my boyfriend love and have made on several occasions:
Chilled Carribean shrimp salad: The first time we made this we picked up ingredients at the local market so the flavour and taste was even more astonishing.
Chicken enchilada soup: Nosotros went back for 3 servings the first time we fabricated this in the tiresome cooker.
Chocolate walnut cookies: So succulent. I fabricated a batch this weekend.
Melted buffalo melts: Remarkably piece of cake merely full of season.
Tumeric cauliflower
Hummus
Steak with Colombian Aji Picante: The recipe for Aji makes a huge portion, it was good, merely it is super spicy.
French onion soup: Yummy just without the asiago cheese well-baked, it can be a fleck bland.
Winter frittata
Butternut squash lasagna roll: Loved it.
Lamb loin chop with yogurt sauce: Loved information technology.
I've mostly modified the salad recipes. For the Baja steak salad, I served it without the steak and had chopped up the Romain lettuce instead of leaving it in leaf form. The only thing I didn't dearest was the heavenly banana oats muffin recipe but I'm not sure if it's because I oversoaked the oats or if I don't similar oats - it did not accept a lot of flavor merely I may try this again. Some recipes I got from her blog were not included such as the five-ingredient flourless chocolate cake that is honestly yummy!
I will be making the carrot risotto this weekend and programme to work my manner through the rest of the salad dressings and sweets. Highly recommended.

However the recipes even so remind me of my mother'southward down home cookin' in the acme of her 90s Weight Watcher days. Boneless skinless craven. Brownish rice. Low fat cheese. Egg white omelets. More boneless skinless chicken, now on meridian of salads. Some of these recipes have that whiff of the accursed WW "null point" category, which never made sense to me as a kid. Of course the highest excesses of the 90s are gone, like fake sugar. But thumbing through this book gave me a combo of nostalgia and painful emotional connection to my mother and her constant drastic battle in and out of the plus size section. In brusk, this volume made me deplorable, and that'southward not its error, merely information technology sure makes me non want to cook from information technology.
If you are a meatist and you don't have lingering 90s nutrition baggage you will probably love this volume, as everyone else seems to.

I've been trying to eat better lately, so I started looking for a cookbook with less calories in listen without sacrificing gustation. I looked at so many earlier I finally picked one. I chose this 1 because it really included the calories of the recipes and surprisingly a lot of books didn't include that information.I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but I did buy the stuff for two at the grocery store. I did have to make several substitutions, considering Walmart didn't have what I needed. So my recipes will have a few more calories so what was in the book. I'm not certain if this will be a continuing outcome or just for these two, but either manner I am excited to try them and await forrard to trying more recipes in the futurity.

The section Kitchen Makeover is ane of my favorites, because information technology goes into detail on what to go rid of in the kitchen, such as disposing of shop bought dressings, giving up nondairy creamers, and keeping it real with the main importance: health before weight. Information technology is finished off with freezer and pantry tips that we all could use when information technology comes to cooking in the kitchen, meal preparing, and planning ahead.
Not just is this cookbook filled with delicious recipes that are lightened up and healthy, only at that place are nutritional information for each recipe, such as serving size, per serving of calories, fat, cobweb, etc. I establish the Skinny Scoop, which could exist found throughout the book, to be extremely helpful. It had informative tips and communication on the dish, such as freezing leftovers in labeled portion sized containers for quick become-to's when in that location isn't time to melt.
It had Food Facts throughout as well, with health benefits, research, and info from studies. There is even niggling notes for Perfect Pairings, such as chili toppers, or alternative ingredients. I institute it vital that in the beginning, at that place was a section for staying motivated with surrounding yourself with people who inspire y'all, think small when it comes to weight lose because every pound lost is closer to your goal, and just really vital reminders that come forth with changing up one's lifestyle to be wellness and smart when it comes to choices and food in the kitchen.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this cookbook, and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a healthy alternative to create those dishes that are scrumptious, but entirely homemade.
I received this cookbook through Blogging for Books for read-to-review purposes.
